Microplane Grate and Shake Nutmeg Grinder/Grater, Black Review

I used to have the rotary nutmeg grinder.I paid around $25 for it.The output was so-so, it leaked in my cabinet and you had to make sure the nut was placed in the chamber just right.The handle broke after about three years.

No more! I love this product from Microplane.I have the smaller Microplane rasp spice grater as well, but I wanted this one because it allows me to store the nuts with the grinder. (That's how I ended up falling for the expensive rotary grinder.) The output is fine.A good feature is that you can grate enough to spoon from the container if you need it for larger recipes.I think it grates finer than the other rasp spice grater.

The product is easy to clean -- unsnap everything and throw it into the dishwasher.

This is not a must-have product, but it is one of those little conveniences that makes cooking so much easier.If you don't already have a grinder, purchase this one.If you already have a grinder, wait until it breaks.

Progressive International Jumbo Tower Grater Review

It's very tall for a grater, and the knob on the top fits right into you palm, and it makes grating very easy. I've had this for over a year now.., no sign of rust or aging. It's held up well.., no dents or dings and the black feet and top are holding up just fine.

I'd easily say this is the best grater I've ever had. It's very simple, yet very practicle. The way it's in a pyramid shape.., I haven't shredded a knuckle yet. I like the sizes of the holes.., I shred a lot of ginger and it works really well for that. (Hint, if you're going to shred ginger get a big hunk, rub off the peel with a spoon, (yes really, it works), and then freeze it before you shred it)

Tupperware Grate 'n Measure Grater Review

It works well...grates cheese, carrots, and cabbage easily. I'm not sure how accurate the measurements are. It does get messy so I always put down a paper towel or waxed paper under it while I grate, but other than that it's easy to use and it doesn't get rusty :)

Microplane Premium Zester/Grater Review

I find this to be a better tool for zesting than the traditional zester.I use less effort zesting with this Microplane to remove only the rind and not get to that white pith that is very bitter.And most of the zest collects underneath the tool or falls from below.A few minor raps and the most of the collected zest fall away.When I use the traditional zesting tool, I get quite a bit of the zest and essential oil on my hands.

This Microplane is fairly easy to wash and clean.But, after washing, hold the handle and shake out the water that collects in the handle.Then place the Microplane with the handle up after washing so the water dries out from the handle.

I see that there is a newer version of this tool with a shorter and wider rasp area.The tool also includes a small and large strip zester.

PROS:Removes the zest with less effort and better control (without removing the bitter pith).Easily collects the zest without it collecting on your hands.

CONS:The rasp and handle area is not totally sealed or removable to either prevent food to collect under the handle or to allow thorough cleaning.

Tom Douglas by Pinzon Microplane Gourmet Series Extra-Coarse Grater Review

This is a fairly decent hand grater. I don't think it lives up the the hype in the product listing, but it performs well. I found the handle very comfortable - soft to the touch, and easy to grip even with wet hands. The grater was sharp and made quick work of carrots, cheese and potatoes. There's a padded loop at the base to protect counters from scratches, and it comes with a plastic guard to protect you from scratches when fishing for it in the cluttered kitchen odds and ends drawer (or is it just me who has one of those!).

Good construction. Nothing fancy, but generally solid. I expect it will last quite a while with normal use. Very pleased to see it was made in the USA.

What I don't care for at all is the holder. According to the listing, the holder sells separately, but one was included in my shipment. In theory it's a good idea - something to hold items so you don't include some finger in whatever you're grating. But, in actual practice, it's not all that well designed. It's hard to snap on or off - ironically, although it is designed to protect your fingers, it's easy to nick your fingers when struggling to get it to come off for cleaning! Items you grate tend to get caught between the grater and the holder, making it cumbersome to use.

While the grater is an OK value, the holder is not - skip that.
