Staub Cast-Iron 2-1/2-Quart Round "La Cocotte" French Oven, Grenadine Review

Staub Cast-Iron 2-1/2-Quart Round 'La Cocotte' French Oven, GrenadineDo you gaze longingly at your pot while it happily does it's thing? You will if you get this one. It is like a little jewel on my stove. I got it for significantly cheaper from Will..Son.. (surprisingly) than the $150 listed here. The enamel seems much nicer than Le Creuset and I like the solid lid with basting spikes. I thought initially the rim around the top of the lid was just a cosmetic reminder of the way charcoal is held on the top of a classic dutch oven. I heard however it could be used to put ice water to encourage condensation. I also like the black enamel interior better since it seems easier to clean (perhaps by appearance). The lid knob is nice but a little small for the weight of the thing...you can use it to lift straight up but if you try to turn it sideways it will feel like it's cutting into your fingers.

Product Description:
"Cocotte" in French means "casserole," but there are plenty of dishes that emerge delectably from this cast-iron French oven. Measuring 9 by 10-2/5 by 5-1/5 inches, the round-shaped unit offers a 2-1/2-quart capacity--perfect for two or three people. Use it for anything from the traditional French recipe coq au vin (chicken in wine) to slow-cooked stews and soups, casseroles, and roasted chicken, as well as many other one-pot meals.
Constructed of durable cast iron, the oven distributes heat evenly and offers excellent heat retention. Its black matte enameled interior produces a natural nonstick surface (no need to season), while its enameled ceramic exterior resists scratches and chips and won't discolor or rust over time. Even more, the oven's smooth, heavy base will never warp and can handle any cooking surface, including induction. The oven also provides integrated side handles that make it easy to transport the unit from the stovetop to the oven (up to 500 degrees F), and its secure-fitting lid comes with a brass- or nickel-plated knob and self-basting spikes that continually redistribute juices back to the ingredients as they cook. The French oven doesn't require high heat--it works best with low to medium heat. Hand wash the unit with non-abrasive cleaners, and be sure to only use silicone or wooden utensils for best results. Made in France, the cocotte comes in an array of rich colors and carries a limited lifetime warranty.
