Lodge Logic 5-Quart Pre-Seasoned Dutch Oven Review

Lodge Logic 5-Quart Pre-Seasoned Dutch OvenI received my eagerly-awaited Dutch oven a couple days ago and made some chili to try it out.It works great, with excellent heat retention... good for browning beef at higher temperatures, and bubbles merrily away even at low heat.Great for anything you want to simmer long and low for the best flavor.
An added bonus - the lid from this Dutch oven also fits the Logic 10-1/4" skillet if required.
To clean, I fill it with hot water, boil a bit to lift the grease, then rinse with hot water and wipe with a paper towel, using a bit of nylon mesh from an onion bag for any stubborn bits, then dry and re-oil.
A couple notes:
If you receive a Logic Dutch oven and find a couple gobs of sticky, brown, almost rust-colored stuff on the handle flange, it is likely NOT rust.Because of the shape of this pot, the pre-seasoning process sometimes leaves a bit of extra, thickened oil in this location. If this is the case, it can be easily rubbed off with a fingertip, much like rubber cement.
The pre-seasoning is very effective, but the inside of the lid, well-designed to keep moisture inside the pot, is a vulnerable spot.Depending on what you cook, the inside of the lid will likely require additional seasoning; I only oiled the cooking surfaces and the first use (no tomato, but enough water to simmer the chili) removed much of the seasoning between the self-basting points. No rust, so it was a simple matter of wiping the inside surface of the lid with peanut oil and putting it in a 450 degree (F) oven a couple times.I'd suggest doing this to the lid before use, and any time the seasoning in this location appears to be thinning.I did not lower my rating for this, as its simply the nature of the beast, not a design or manufacturing flaw.

Product Description:
Lodge cast-iron cookware has long been admired for its superior heat retention, but now the company offers another enticement with its Lodge Logic line. Lodge Logic cookware, such as this 5-quart Dutch oven, comes preseasoned with a proprietary vegetable oil formula and is ready for cooking right of the box--unlike traditional Lodge cookware, which needs seasoning in the oven before use. The timesaving process allows the oil to penetrate deeply into the cast-iron surface, maintaining the cookware for generations and creating an attractive heirloom finish.
This Dutch oven measures 10-1/4 inches in diameter and 4 inches deep--an ideal size for most family recipes. Whether baking casseroles, enchiladas, pasta sauce, or a compact pot roast, the pan delivers a smooth, consistent temperature without wasting heat. The pan's esteemed heat retention is especially ideal for slow-cooking recipes that prize tender meats and rich, seasoned flavors. In addition, the underside of the lid contains several self-basting tips that allow the condensed liquid to remoisten the food, keeping the contents from drying out. With proper care, Lodge Logic cast-iron cookware will last a lifetime. The company recommends hand washing the Dutch oven with a stiff brush and hot water. Calphalon Unison Nonstick 4-Quart Soup Pot with Lid Review

Calphalon Unison Nonstick 4-Quart Soup Pot with LidI have several other Unison pieces. I decided to grab the little soup pot while it was on sale.

It's a perfect size for 2-4 servings of soup or pasta sauce and fits easily into the dishwasher for cleanup.

Nothing sticks and in this instance (unlike the omelette pans) the lid fits securely.

I have used it for soup, pasta, a small pot roast (goes from stovetop to oven without a problem) and even making hard boiled eggs.

I cook without recipes and have a tendency to cook to the limits of the pot I'm using, so this petite soup pot keeps me from making soup for 12 when I meant to make soup for four.

I've used Calphalon pans for almost 20 years and the Unison's ability to be put into the dishwasher is the main reason why I'm slowly replacing my older pots with these.

Lodge Signature 4-1/2-Quart Seasoned Cast-Iron Dutch Oven with Stainless-Steel HandlesIn the year I have had this pot I have made some great stews and pot roasts. The capacity is ample to serve 2-4 people. It performs as a good heavy dutch oven should. The Stainless handles add a touch of class to the pot. Lodge Logic 7-Quart Dutch Oven with Spiral Handle Bail and Iron Cover Review

Lodge Logic 7-Quart Dutch Oven with Spiral Handle Bail and Iron CoverWe wanted a dutch oven with a good lid so we could bake Mark Bitman's no-knead bread. This requires baking at high temperatures (450-500 degrees). After looking at options ranging as much as $250, we ordered this cast iron dutch oven.Out of the box it was cured pretty well, the lid fits nicely and the spiral handle is cleverly engineered. It works perfectly, and the price is right. It is quite heavy, but that's what holds all that heat.

Product Description:
The American-based company Lodge has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. No other metal is as long-lasting and works as well for spreading and retaining heat evenly during cooking. Lodge's Logic line of cookware comes factory pre-seasoned with the company's vegetable oil formula, and is ready to use right out of the box.
At 12 inches in diameter and 4-3/4 inches deep, this 7-quart Dutch oven holds a heap of chili, chicken and rice, or fruit cobbler. This model is not the campfire style, with legs, wire handle, and a lid for coals. This one is flat-bottomed to sit on a stovetop burner or in the oven, with a domed lid that sends moisture back into the pot. It features a traditional wire ball handle that's been popular for over a century. While the Dutch oven comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. After the meal is done, simply scrub the cast iron with a stiff brush and hot water, no soap, and dry immediately. Lodge covers the sturdy oven with a lifetime limited warranty against defects, and when cared for properly, this virtually indestructible pan should last for generations.

Lodge Logic Dutch Oven with Loop Handles Review

Lodge Logic Dutch Oven with Loop HandlesWhen I saw the price, free shipping, and factory pre-seasoning, this dutch oven proved irresistable. The size is great and the black color was attractive.Sadly, the factory pre-seasoning did not meet expectations! I learned to cook using cast iron, and I still own several "original finish" cast iron skillets, griddles and specialty pans (tri-ply stainless steel is wonderful, but some things just cook more evenly with cast iron). While cast iron is not difficult to season,it was just an added bonus to order a dutch oven that I thought would have an even, well applied finish to begin the seasoning process (properly seasoned cast iron pans only get better over the years). When the dutch oven arrived, I was surprised by what seemed to be a discoloration under the finish on the inner surface of the pot lid. I used the dutch oven for the first time to make chili. The steam from the chili caused the "pre-seasoning" on the inner surface of the lid to mottle badly, and the area that had initially appeared discolored was revealed to be covered withrust. A tell-tale metallic smell was also present (usually a sign that your pan might need to be seasoned again). Needless to say, I was disapointed. This pan proved to be MORE effort than the original finish pans since I had to scrub down the lid to remove the remainingmottled pre-seasoning, and to remove the rust. I then just seasoned the lid properly the old-fashion way in my oven. All in all, the Dutch oven is well worth $25 (and the saved $12.66 in shipping charges is also appreciated), but the Lodge Cast Iron Manufacturing Co. has a reputation for quality that this finish did not meet.I contacted the company to express my concerns (ie, did I need to take additional steps to remove all of the factory applied finish) and to ask if this problem was evident in other pans in the pre-seasoned line. The Lodge Co. has not responded to my email. Bottom line, before paying full price plus shipping, for anything in the pre-seasoned line, I would compare the cost to the original finish, or to the beautiful new Lodge enamel cast iron items.
