Screwpull Waiter's Corkscrew Review

....but a solid corkscrew.Love the deeply-hinged boot.Makes extracting longer corks a snap.The hinge action and overall construction is superior in every way to the ubiquitous Pulltap corkscrew.

My big problem with it is the bulk.It has a very wide handle.Not a problem if you keep it in a drawer in the kitchen, but too big to comfortably carry in a pocket; as I need to as I'm a bartender at a wine bar.If you want something with the same design but in a slimmer form, seek out the original Coutale.I found the original Coutale corkscrew for $15 at a certain winery in Paso Robles co-owned by a certain famous family from France's Rhone Valley.(If that ain't a hint, chances are you aren't much of a wine snob.)That's what I carry at work now.

I open dozens of bottles a night at work and I'm very particular about the harware I use.I've tried everything from cheap distributor give-aways to Pulltaps to Coutale/Screwpull to Chateau Laguiole (the carbon fiber Eric Beaumard edition is quite nice) and this Screwpull/Coutale design is by far the easiest to use.

Metrokane Velvet Corkscrew, Black Review

I love this corkscrew, it works very well. After having used the waiter type for years, this is a fantastic change. Having the foil-cutter built in is a big plus, I don't have to fumble around with a piece on the end like with the waiter or have a seperate piece to keep track of, and it does the job just fine.

It's much simpler and smaller (saves space and is more transportable) than the lever type, which I've also used. And, in my opinion, is more efficient and easier to use. I've also heard complaints that they tend to get more difficult to use over time.

I can't stand the "winged" type either, they are such a pain. The problems that I had with the waiter or winged types were getting them started and making sure that the screw went in staight, having it slip while pulling,or struggling to get a stubborn cork out. I've also had the worm (screw) loosen or break over time with the waiter corkscews. These are not a problems anymore.

It may be more expensive than the more basic types, which may be the way to go if you only open a bottle once a month or less. But it is so worth it if you are opening a bottle a week or more. Every time I use it I'm am amazed by how easily the cork comes out. Looks like this tool will be around in my home for a long time.

Screwpull Table Model Metal Trilogy Bottle Opener Review

My husband and I went through many different types of corkscrews before receiving our first Screwpull model years ago as a gift (ours looked just like this one: Screwpull Table Model Corkscrew, Black, except that it was translucent brown in color).We were extremely impressed with the Screwpull!Unlike "rabbit ears" or other models, there is nothing to push or pull:you simply position the Screwpull over the cork, twist the screw part into the cork using the handle at the top of the unit, and voila!--the cork magically lifts into the Screwpull, seemingly of its own volition.The Screwpull never fails to remove even the most stubborn corks without any crumbling or debris.

Even though our original Screwpull performed flawlessly for many years, it was made of plastic, and my husband mentioned that it would be nice to have a metal model.So, when searching for Christmas gifts for him, I was thrilled to discover that the Screwpull brand had *just* started making a metal version of their fabulous product!I chose the Screwpull in "Satin Chrome," a smart-looking silver unit with a black top.This sturdier Screwpull works just the same as our old model yet seems much more durable overall.Furthermore, Screwpull added a small but significant little innovation to this newer version:the "Activ-Ball"!Before, the only thing that was sometimes a problem with the old Screwpull was getting the cork off the screw part once you were done; now, you just turn the handle the other way, and a little red ball gently pushes the cork right off!

There are fancier, more elaborate corkscrews out there, but I don't know why anyone would bother with them.No matter what kind of corkscrew you get, just make sure it is a Screwpull, and better yet, get this model--highly recommended!
