Totally Bamboo Butcher Block, Large Review

My compliments to Totally Bamboo and Amazon for carrying such a quality product - I highly recommend it. The shipment arrived promptly, and the block was well packed and protected. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe how beautiful - and brawny - this block is. The pictures don't do it justice. It is extremely well made - tightly crafted, very smooth and silky to the touch, substantial, but not too heavy to easily lift and move. The legs are just the right height and the rubber feet hold it nicely in place. It gives a very satisfying "thunk" when chopping -and dicing, slicing and mincingare a joy. Very easy care - wipe with hot, soapy water or vinegar and treat with wood oil as needed. Goodbye, wimpy acrylic and rough wood............hello beautiful bamboo! I give it a big TEN and will be purchasing more Totally Bamboo products.

Edited to add: Since purchasing this chopping block, I have discovered a wonderful product for treating wood and cast iron. It's a food grade mix of beeswax and mineral oil and can be found on eBay, sold by Wooden Wonders. Name is Beeswax Butcher Block Conditioner. It's thick and has a firm texture, meaning more beeswax and less oil. Great product!

Joseph Joseph Elevate Slotted Turner Review

I liked the design of this.....the elevation to keep the turner off of the countertop, so ordered.I absolutely love it!It is comfortable to the hand, and is quite sturdy.It is not a flimsy turner.I just ordered another of the Joseph Joseph Elevate products, and hope that I like it as much as I like this turner.I have trouble finding kitchen utensils that I really like - but, this is a winner.

Chicago Cutlery Woodworks 19-1/2" x 13-1/2" Cutting Board Review

The board is the right size for carving up a whole chicken and the "moat", while modest in width/depth, kept the counters clean.Another plus is that it is reasonably light for its size.The one small surprise for me is that the wood is so very dry.It soaked up two very generous applications of mineral oil very quickly.If it doesn't come with oiling instructions, you'll still want to oil it as soon as possible and perhaps with multiple applications each spaced out by a day.

New comments:
After seasoning the board, hand washing, and 6 months of happy use, the board split along a glued joint. This happened after it had been sitting on the counter for a week under the weight of a homemade loaf of bread and a medium-weight glass cake cover. My best guess is that the board had become just slightly (and most imperceptively) warped and the constant distributed weight provided enough stress to crack apart the glue overnight -- 6+" of it! I know nothing about woodworking but I doubt that seasoning alone can strengthen a joint or prevent minor warpage. So I'm lowering the product to a 3 star rating.

1/17/08:Maybe I need a life but I just thought I'd add that there has been no further splitting after 1.5 years of use.I guess nothing is perfect and I certainly still enjoy using the board very much.

Proteak 601 Bowl Cut-Out Rectangle End Grain Chopping Block - 20 X 14 X 2.5 Inch Review

This one's hard to beat in the kitchen, great size, nice weight and the cut-out space makes it easy to shovel my ingredients into the pan. I like to keep my knives super sharp and I've yet to see any marks in either of the teak cutting boards I own.
