Yamazaki Hafnia Butter Knife Review

Yamazaki Hafnia Butter KnifeHigh quality, made in japan. This is very small and thin compared to the dinner knives from the Hafnia flatware collection.

This is great for spreading butter on toast, bagels, etc. This does not do a good job for spreading cream cheese or jam.

Checkout iittala's butter knife. It does not have any serrations, but it's great for spreading anything and it goes well with the Hafnia collection.

Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 8-Quart Stockpot with Glass Lid Review

Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 8-Quart Stockpot with Glass LidI'm a big fan of this line of pots. The handles are extended to perfect length to work with a mitten or kitchen towel. The gradual flaring of the top half of the pot is great for cleaning because it allows for more arm angles. This also improves vision when looking at the bottom. The glass top is a must for perfect flame adjustment to achieve an ideal simmer.I use this pot only for stock making since it is a narrow tall pot.The previous reviewer objected to the time it took to bring water to a boil.I didn't notice any remarkable difference between this pot and my other pots. But since I'm only making stock, I know I will be using it for more than 2 hrs each time so losing seven minutes (if thats the case) is in the noise. And once you achieve a boil, simmering requires so little energy with the top on.My only issue is that the tri-ply could be thicker like thickness of Calphalon's cheaper Tri-Ply line.I'm guessing that it could be a compromise made to allow more ease of manufacturing the unique and beautiful shape of the pot.I'm trying to figure out why the long handles used in the skillets and sauce pansare so clunky and ugly that it goes totally counter to the shear elegance of the stock pots. It's almost like two separate designs teams worked on the line with one team having an artistic eye and the other a utilitarian philosophy. How did this stylistic inconsistency got past the production lead and upper management?

Fissler Original Pro Collection 1.5 Quart Saucepan Review

Fissler Original Pro Collection 1.5 Quart SaucepanThis is my second Fissler "Original Pro" pan and my next one will be too. It really holds the heat and spreads it around evenly. I don't have a super-fancy stove, just regular gas burners; but with pans like these a home-pro stove seems superfluous. Plus, no rivets on the inside to get gunky. Very solid and heavy. The lip makes for easy pouring. The metal handle stays cool on the stove. All around much better design and build quality than the All-Clad stuff. I usually cook for 2 and this is the right size for risotto, soups, etc. for us. I've also used it to make creme broulee and that worked out just dandy. Highly recommended. BTW my other fissler is the 8" sautee pan, and my next one will be a casserole for bigger meals and indian curries.

J.A. Henckels International Classic Clad 1-Quart Saucepan with Lid Review

J.A. Henckels International Classic Clad 1-Quart Saucepan with LidI was prepared to buy All-Clad stainless, except that I find the All-Clad handle uncomfortable & awkward. The Henckels Classic Clad has all the features I've been wanting, with a most comfortable handle. I've boiled water in it using induction and natural gas burners, and in both cases the handle stayed cool enough to use without a hotpad or mitt. I really like the quality, the pot is very attractive, and the price is a great value.

Product Description:
Henckels International Clad Cookware is tri-ply cookware composed of 18/10 stainless, aluminum and magnetic stainless. The middle aluminum layer extends from the base up the sides of the pan so the heat is conducted evenly throughout the pan. This increases the cooking performance of the pan and eliminates hot spots, which can burn foods because of uneven heating when cooking. The stainless steel material on the interior cooking surface and outside of the pan is high strength, resistant to rusting and does not react when in contact with food.

Hawkins 10 Liter Stainless Steel Cooker Review

Hawkins 10 Liter Stainless Steel CookerI actually have the 6 liter or 6.5 quart stainless steel version of this pressure cooker, which is no longer listed for some reason.I narrowed my choices down to the Hawkins and the Kuhn Rikon brands, since they had the best reviews with the least negatives like usability and durability problems.I've had a number of medium quality pressure cookers in the past that failed from falling apart or wearing out their o-ring seals every year, so I wanted a quality one this time. The Kuhn Rikon was about $200, so I bought the Hawkins, which I am happy with.

It's very popular in India, probably because it lasts forever and it's very energy efficient.Once it reaches full pressure I drop the heat from 10 down to a 3.It also uses almost no water, so you can use a minimum of liquid without it going dry on you. It is also safe in case of overpressure. If you do mess up and blow it up, it will release pressure below the handle, so you won't get injured or make a mess of your ceiling. It is very easy/convenient to use and it has a five year warranty, which you aren't likely to use.It appears very rugged. It has a thick completely flat bottom for even cooking on any cooking surface including flat top electric stoves.

There are some potential negatives. It does have a very narrow diameter for it's size because it is tall and narrow. It also has a lip at the top that reduces the usable width and bowls you can insert for cooking to 6.5 inches wide on my 6 liter cooker.I have a small pyrex bowl that fits perfectly for very modest size portions. If you expect to use larger bowls, you'll be disappointed. You also lose a few inches of volume at the top because you have to insert the lid at a steep angle inside the top before seating it underneath the top lip by design. You shouldn't be filling the pressure cooker more than 2/3 full anyway for safety reasons on any pressure cooker, though. You won't have much luck ordering special parts or inserts. The USA Hawkins support doesn't know anything about it.You'll have to go through India. The top lip does make it impossible to completely dry out by hanging upside down, but you can just shake it a little to get most of the water out and let the rest evaporate in the cupboard. There was a big hole in the box it arrived in but the pressure cooker was undamaged. The book manual is very cheaply made and some pages fell out of it immediately upon first opening but these complaints are minor.

I'm very happy with it since I was looking for an easy to use and very reliable stainless steel pressure cooker without paying a fortune.

Norpro Spaetzle Maker Review

Norpro Spaetzle MakerI was worried that this wouldn't work well, that the dough wouldn't drop through and that it wouldn't really make the process easier. I was wrong! I've made spaetzle before, both by cutting it from a board over boiling water and also by pressing the dough through a collander. This is sooo much easier and faster. The clip fits over the edge of my large soup pot with some room to spare. The handle is sturdy, solid, and it stays cool. Also, it is long enough so that even over my largest pot, the handle is neither over the boiling water nor the flame. The cutting surface is sturdy stainless steel - no twisting, no bending. The hopper slides easily when loaded. My dough dropped down into the pot in uniform and cleanly cut little dumplings as I slid the hopper back and forth - no additional pressing was necessary. The dough didn't cling to or cook onto the surfaces of either the cutter or hopper.I was able to fit my 6 serving recipe into the hopper in just two quick batches- about 2 minutes per batch, from loading the hopper to lifting out the finished spaetzle. The hopper slides off easily for cleaning.(I brush the surfaces off under cold water right away, and after dinner I hand wash it in hot soapy water.) I'm so happy I bought this!
