The smooth surface side is not very smooth but acceptable.Be awared that the measurement of the outside rim diameter is actually 13.5 inches and NOT 14 inches.The griddle area diameter is 12 inches. The box said 11", a misrepresentation due to Metric conversion over to English measurement.
The product came and made from China which is alright since China has a very long history with cast iron cookware and their cast iron cookware are just as good.
