Kitchen Aid Cookware: FoldTuk 6 Cup Rectangular Collapsible Bakeware and Storage Container, Black Review

When the wave of collapsible containers began a few years ago, I was hesitant to get swept up in it. After all, I had spent 30 years amassing a Tupperware collection to which I was very attached. I took comfort that one huge cupboard in my kitchen contained nothing but it and whipped topping & butter containers in various sizes. I knew I was prepared for any emergency leftover contingency.

Eventually I bought one collapsible container, thinking, "This will never work." I used and abused that thing, trying my best to find fault with it. No matter what I did, I could not make it shrink, warp or leak. Slowly I bought more and more collapsible containers, but I couldn't bring myself to part with the others.

It took downsizing to a condo to force me to rethink my storage options. What used to occupy a full cupboard now takes up only one shelf. Two vertical file dividers from an office supply store hold all my containers and lids upright.

My old mixing bowls, popcorn bowl and colander used to occupy one rack in the dishwasher, so I usually hand-washed those items.The collapsible versions take up the same space as large dinner plates.

They all are designed to clean perfectly well when collapsed, and hold up well in the dishwasher. I also replaced my strainers and measuring cups with collapsible counterparts.

Unfortunately, I fear the fad has not taken hold in my area. Local stores no longer stock any collapsible items, so I had to turn to the internet. I have several Rubbermaid collapsibles, but these Fold-Tuk ones are a step above that. They are more substantial, come in more sizes, and a variety of colors (I only found Rubbermaid locally in light blue). Also, the oval and oblong shapes are easier to store than round ones.

Honestly, I don't see why everyone doesn't replace all their kitchen containers with collapsibles. I have used them for at least two years and I am hooked. I often give starter kits as gifts, trying to convert the last holdouts among my friends.
